Why Radon Testing?

  • Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. According to the EPA, breathing in radon leads to 15,000 – 22,000 lung cancer deaths per year.
  • Radon is a prevalent issue in many areas, and it can seep into buildings through cracks in the foundation, walls, floors, or other openings. Since radon is invisible and has no smell, testing is necessary to determine its presence and concentration levels.
  • Pennsylvania has the third highest radon levels in the country
  • Radon pockets are very common in the Chester County, PA and Delaware County, PA areas.

  • Your living patterns change and you begin occupying a lower level of your home (such as a basement)
  • Real Estate Transaction – You are buying or selling a home
  • The last test is not recent, i.e. within two years and your home tested above 2.0 pCi/l
  • You have renovated or altered your home since you tested
  • You have a radon remediation system and you have not tested in 2 or more years

  • SIS only does mold testing and inspections and radon testing, not remediation.  Our reports are unbiased and accurate.
  • We don’t invent or exaggerate mold or radon issues in the hopes of making money on the remediation.

If you are working from home …

In the past few years, as more people work remotely, a significant number are using their homes as their offices. More people are also opting to have their basements finished to act as an office. Radon primarily enters houses through basements, rising from the soil and entering a home through the foundation.

What is the Radon Testing Process?

  • Types of Radon Tests: There are two main types of radon tests: short-term and long-term tests. Short-term tests typically take a few days to a week and provide a snapshot of radon levels. Long-term tests run for a minimum of three months and give a more comprehensive assessment of average radon concentrations.
  • Radon Testing Methods: Radon testing can be conducted using passive or active devices. Passive devices include charcoal canisters, alpha track detectors, and charcoal liquid scintillation detectors. Active devices, such as continuous radon monitors, provide real-time measurements and data logging.
  • SIS uses a SunRadon Continuous Monitor for a short term test. The test runs for 48 hours and will capture the hourly radon readings.
  • After the radon test, our professional will provide a detailed report that includes their findings, assessment of the radon level and recommendations for remediation if necessary.

What if Radon Mitigation is Required?

  • If elevated radon levels are detected, radon mitigation measures may be necessary to reduce the gas concentration. Radon mitigation techniques include sealing foundation cracks, installing ventilation systems, or implementing sub-slab depressurization systems.
  • SIS can recommend a certified radon professional mitigation specialist for this procedure.
